Air quality alerts continue in the United States as smoke from Canada’s wildfires spreads: live updates

Smoke from wildfires in Canada continues to trigger air quality alerts in US states, with health officials warning people, especially those in sensitive groups, such as children, the elderly or suffering respiratory problems, to limit their time outdoors.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday issued a ground stop on all flights to New York’s LaGuardia Airport due to poor visibility. The air quality index reached “dangerous” levels in Philadelphia, where everyone was urged to stay indoors. And employees at the National Mall in Washington, DC, have been encouraged to reduce all outdoor activities.

Updated forecast maps showed lingering smoke drifting slowly south. And while conditions are expected to improve Thursday on the northeast and Atlantic coast, they are expected to worsen in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Detroit.
