Lisa Ling embarks on a new adventure.
The longtime reporter brings her reporting prowess to CBS News as a contributor starting this summer, where she will cover a wide range of topics on CBS News shows and platforms.
“Over the years, there have been so many stories that I’ve come across that maybe wouldn’t have warranted a full hour,” she told PEOPLE. “And so the opportunity to do these shorter pieces is really exciting because you know, the people that I want to feature, their stories are just as worth telling, however long we need to be able to tell the story. ‘history.”

Ling’s move to CBS News comes five months after CNN aired the final two episodes of That’s Life with Lisa Ling, which has fallen victim to the wider cable news network budget cuts. Over the course of nine seasons, the documentary series explored topics such as the shifting boundaries around modern love, the American epidemic of alcoholism and mental illness in Ling’s hometown of Los Angeles. The journalist also traveled the United States for the original HBO Max series To go outwhere she examined different Asian American communities and cuisines.

Ling also covered the civil war in Afghanistan for Channel One News, where she got her start, before landing a coveted spot as a co-host on View. She traveled to North Korea as a National Geographic correspondent to open up the country’s closed and authoritarian society. As host and executive producer of the show OWN Our America, Ling challenged viewers to understand different perspectives by exposing the lives of people from different communities.
“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years,” she says. “I consider my work to be quite experiential in nature. … It’s never been more important to have this kind of truly human-centered reporting.

At CBS News, Ling will be encouraged to deliver more of her branded reporting.
“Lisa delivers some of the most authentic, human and revealing interviews because of the way she connects with the communities and people she covers,” CBS News President and CBS Co-Head Khemlani said in a statement. “It gives her and us a chance to communicate the pulse of the country and the world in a more experiential way.”
The historic importance of CBS News, which has won numerous awards over the decades for its journalism, is not lost on Ling.
“This is the house of [Walter] Cronkite and where Connie Chung anchored the evening news,” she explains. “So for me, it’s an honor to be able to carry on the torch.”
