Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn in 2020

Taylor Swift could shed more light on her split from Joe Alwyn earlier this year.

In a new vault track titled “You’re Losing Me,” Swift, 33, sings about feeling sick as a relationship crumbles before her eyes.

Comparing herself to a “phoenix always rising from the ashes, mending all its gashes”, she wonders if she should stay and try to fix the relationship or give it up.

“Do I throw away everything we built or keep it? / I’m getting tired,” she sings.

In the chorus, Swift repeats, “Stop, you’re losing me,” multiple times before adding, “I can’t find a pulse / My heart won’t start for you anymore / ’cause you’re losing me.”

After the chorus, she sings “my pain is such an imposition” as she continues to hint at a failing relationship.

“Now you’re running down the hall / And you know what they all say, ‘You don’t know what you got until it’s gone.'”

In the wake of the exit – out of Midnights (Til Dawn Edition) – fans struggled to make sense of the soulful lyrics, especially in light of Swift’s split from the actor, 32, after more than six years of dating. An insider previously told PEOPLE the breakup was the result of “differences in their personalities” that led them to realize they “weren’t the right person.”

Many fans compared the dark lyrics to those of some of Swift’s most romantic songs, where she sang about being in love – and she was, at the time, with Alwyn.

One lyric in particular from the song’s bridge stood out to fans. Whether Swift and Alwyn had married during their relationship had been a major source of speculation, and in the bridge, Swift sings, “I’m the best thing at this party (You lose me) / And I wouldn’t marry me either.”

In a rare statement about their relationship in 2022, Alwyn joked that WSJ Magazine“If I had a pound every time I think I was told I was engaged, then I would have a lot of coins in pounds.”

He added: “I mean, the truth is if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say.”

After admitting she won’t get married in the song, Swift describes herself as ‘a pathological people-pleasing person’ as she recalls pleading with her partner to ”Do something, baby, say something’ “, while their relationship flounders.

Although many fans are speculating about the root of “You’re Losing Me,” Swift has moved on in the months since her split from Alwyn.

She’s been linked to fellow musician Matty Healy of The 1975 in recent weeks, and the pair were recently spotted sharing a kiss at a party in New York City on Wednesday.

Healy, 34, also attended several of Swift’s recent stops on The Eras Tour and supported her from the crowd. He even took the stage several times himself to perform alongside Phoebe Bridgers, his close friend and one of Swift’s early acts.

Despite recent changes in her relationship, the singer-songwriter told the audience on last week’s show in Foxborough, Mass., that she’s “never been happier.”
