The Yankees tied the series against the Boston Red Sox with a 3-1 win Saturday night in the Bronx.
Here are the takeaways…
– The Boston Starter Tanner Houck confused the Yankees the first time in the order, striking out the first nine batters he faced and stoking six of them, including pulling the team out late in the third inning.
So what did New York do the second time around? GOOD, Gleyber Torres jumped it on the first pitch he threw in the inning for a solo shot that gave the Yanks a 1-0 lead.
– On the other side of the ball, german domingo tied Houck pitch to pitch, keeping Boston at bay for the first five innings. But much like Torres in the fourth, Raphael Devers unloaded on the first pitch he saw from the German in the sixth inning and deposited it in the net beyond the center field wall to tie the game at 1-1.
Devers’ home run aside, the German pitched brilliantly in his six innings of work, giving up just one run on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts. In his last seven starts, the right-hander boasts a 2.20 ERA.
– Despite starting in a draw, the German was in line for victory after Willie CalhounThe late-sixth-inning home run again gave New York the lead. With two outs and no one, Calhoun pushed Houck deep on a fly ball that just went over the right field wall, spoiling the right-hander’s solid outing.
– Wandy Peralta was the first pitcher out of the bullpen and after two quick takedowns, the southpaw walked back-to-back batters (including one at Masataka Yoshida in an at-bat that lasted 14 throws) to bring up the dangerous Devers. With the game left against left, Peralta forced Devers out to finish the round unscathed.
– The Yanks got an insurance run in the seventh after a pinch Isiah Kiner-Falefa isolated lifter Brennan Bernardino to start the inning, advanced to second on a groundout and came back to score on Kyle Higashiokais a two-release single.
– Tommy Kahnle pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Clay Holmes finished things off with a scoreless ninth to get the stoppage and even this rivalry series.
