Fresh off the plane from Paris with just 16 hours to spare, Offset and Quavo planned the perfect tribute performance to honor their late Migos bandmate Takeoff at the 2023 BET Awards last weekend. “It cleansed my soul,” Offset shared in a recent Instagram Live, where he detailed the process of preparing for the surprise last-minute appearance.

“We did the BET performance, man, it was iconic,” he said. “Me and my brother Qua, we put it together in 4, 3 p.m., we landed from Paris at 9 p.m. and went straight to work to figure out how we were going to put on this show. And we do it because we have real stars We make this music. We’re the greatest band to ever hit the mic – RIP my brother Take. We did it for my brother Take.

Takeoff – real name Kirsnik Khari Ball – was shot and killed in the early morning of November 1, 2022 at a bowling alley in Houston. He was 28 years old. The rapper’s alleged shooter, Patrick Clark, was charged with murder in May. Earlier this year, during the In Memoriam segment at the 2023 Grammy Awards, Quavo paid tribute to Takeoff without Offset. The BET Awards appearance marked their first performance together on the same stage since Takeoff’s death.

“Me and Qua were standing brother to brother and I appreciate everyone for the support [us]. It was a film, it was an atmosphere. We needed it for the culture,” he added. “We did this in 16 hours, like real professionals. I went out 4 p.m., didn’t sleep, locked in the vision. Qua and I sat locked on the visuals, locked on the stage position, the lighting, everything, as a unit. You know, when you put the three heads together, it’s always going to be cinematic. It will always be the truth.

Offset and Quavo’s reunion performance included a medley of “Hotel Lobby”, which appeared on Quavo and Takeoff’s collaborative album Designed for Infinity Links only under the moniker Unc and Phew, and Migos released the single “Bad and Boujee”. As lasers and a fiery backdrop lit up the scene, an image of Takeoff reaching up to the sky was projected onto the massive screen behind them.
