Steve Bannon, a longtime supporter and former adviser to former President Donald Trump, has been subpoenaed to appear in Washington, DC, by a federal grand jury in connection with an investigation into the January 6, 2021 insurrection on Capitol Hill. the United States, severalnews outlets reported Wednesday.
The subpoena, which was first reported by BNC Newsis the latest update on Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the attack on the US Capitol and Trump’s actions following his 2020 election defeat.
Sources said BNC News that the subpoena was sent at the end of May and is asking for documents and testimony. CNN confirmed later this report.
Bannon was previously called to appear before the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, but refused to cooperate with the congressional subpoena. It was found guilty of contempt of Congress in July 2022, a decision he later appealed.
While Bannon’s contempt of Congress conviction is pending, the former campaign official and Trump adviser is also expected to stand trial in May 2024 on criminal charges for a separate case related to his involvement in a fundraising campaign for Trump’s southern border wall.
The Jan. 6 probe is just one of many involving Trump, including one involving his mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence. Last week, federal prosecutors reportedly told Trump lawyers that the former president was the target of a criminal investigation around the Mar-a-Lago affair.
The Mar-a-Lago and January 6 investigations are ongoing supervised by Smith, but the grand juries of the two cases are separate.
Smith’s office and Bannon’s attorney, Harlan Protass, did not respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment.
