The Yankees lost a close game to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, losing in extra innings, 3-2, in a pitching duel.
Here are the takeaways…
– Despite the lack of offense in this one, the second set saw a total of three runs scored. For Boston, Justin Turner started the inning with a solo starter Clarke Schmidt to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
– New York recovered that point, then a few in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a bit of luck. After Josh Donaldson walked to start things off, Boston starter Brayan Bello removed the next two, but Billy McKinney hitting a ground rule double to place the runners in second and third place. Jose Trevino followed by a hit down the middle that the infielder had played perfectly and would have thrown Trevino to end the inning, but the ball hit the second base sack and ricocheted off the outfield to score two runs and put the Yanks ahead, 2-1.
– That was the extent of the offense for both teams until the eighth inning due to good outings from Schmidt and Bello. Schmidt ended his night after 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, no walks and four strikeouts. He left after 82 pitches (60 strikes) and lowered his ERA for the season to 4.70.
Bello threw even better, though, and if not for that pinball game in the second inning, he likely would have recorded the win. Bello went seven innings, allowing those two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
– The Red Sox recovered it in the eighth due to an error of Gleyber Torres on the infield. After Kike Hernandez started the inning with a single to left field, McKinney returned the ball to the infield on a jump that Torres just missed, allowing Hernandez to advance to second base and scoring position.
A walk, sacrificing decay and soil Michael King scored the equalizer and turned the game around.
– After Clay Holmes And Kenley Jansen both did their job in the ninth inning, the game headed into extra innings where Boston produced a run against Ron Marinaccio on a Hernandez single that drove the free runner. It turned out to be the game winner as the Yankees lost 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth.
– New York did not register success after DJ LeMahieuin the fourth inning as the team continues to struggle offensively without Judge Aaron.

The Yankees have the day off Monday before starting a two-game series with the Mets’ long distance rival Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field in the first installment of the 2023 Subway Series.
