NFL reportedly investigating fifth Lions player for game violations

This offseason has been surprising for the Detriot Lions. Four players from Squad 2022 have already been punished for playing, and soon we may add one more person to this list.

According to Kalyn Kaler of The Athletic, the NFL is investigating an unnamed 2022 Lions player for potentially violating NFL playing rules. Athletic are not naming the player at this time (as the investigation is still ongoing and the player is said to have yet to meet with investigators) but said the player is not a senior member of the squad .

This new investigation follows the April 21 announcement that four Lions players had been suspended for gambling rule violations. Lions players CJ Moore and Quintez Cephus have been suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games, while Stanley Berryhill and 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams have been suspended for six games for apparently betting on games college football while at team facilities. Moore, Cephus and Berryhill have since been released.

It’s baffling that five Lions players have been investigated and/or punished for gambling offences. What’s in the water there? Does head coach Dan Campbell actually feed players’ kneecaps? More importantly, are team personnel or the NFLPA or the NFL itself properly educating players, especially new ones, on the rules of the game?

This is a major question, as Williams recently said he was unaware of NFL playing rules until he was suspended for violating them.
