What are stock market holidays?

A so-called holiday is a non-weekend day when the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, or bond markets close for the day. Usually this holiday resembles Thanksgiving or Christmas.

On or near public holidays, stock markets remain open, while bond markets remain closed or close earlier. Sometimes markets close for days of national mourning, like the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq did to honor the late President George HW Bush in 2018.

If a given holiday falls on a Saturday, the Friday preceding it generally becomes a stock market holiday. Likewise, markets usually close the following Monday if the public holiday falls on a Sunday.

Regular hours for the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Markets are closed on weekends.
