TORK BOMBS ARE COMING: We may be witnessing the start of Spencer Torkelson’s breakthrough
Game Notes: Reese Olson looked great in his first two career starts against the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, but struggled mightily in his last outing against the Atlanta Braves.
That’s certainly understandable, as the Braves have one of the strongest offenses in the league with Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson leading a loaded lineup.
Reese Olson (no relation to Matt) allowed seven runs on five hits against the Braves, including an absolute bombshell from Acuña’s home run to deep center field. Olson’s ERA went from 2.70 to 6.08 after a tough day. He will certainly try to regain the form he had in his first two games, as he allowed only three combined points in those outings.
Meanwhile, the Tigers will face a pitcher looking for his first win in 14 starts this year. Jordan Lyles has an abysmal 0-11 record in 2023. Admittedly, some of that can be attributed to throwing for the Royals, who sit last in the AL Central. But it’s completely fair to say that Lyles struggled as well.
Lyles has allowed five runs in each of his last two outings. One thing Lyles has shown is his ability to fill innings, as he has pitched at least five innings in all but two of his starts this year.
After having two bullpen starts over the weekend (Friday and Sunday), the Tigers will certainly be looking for Olson to follow in Lyles’ footsteps and fill in some much-needed innings.
