When the nominations for the 2023 Tony Awards were announced in May, It’s not Mo won six pleasantly surprising nominations, despite fears the Tonys would overlook the play which ended months earlier despite a star-studded campaign to save it.
But when the 2023 Tony Awards were handed out on Sunday night, It’s not Mo has not won a single award for which it has been nominated.

And in the best lead actor in a game category, Wendell Pierce was also snubbed for his role in Death of a sellera project often popular with Tony voters but not as successful this time around, even in terms of nominations.
In a year with several Hollywood nominees, most went home empty-handed, along with Samuel L. Jackson (August Wilson’s Piano Lesson), Sara Bareilles (In the woods) and Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford (Sweeney Todd) not winning the awards for which they were nominated.
Overall, the groups led by Groban and Ashford Sweeney Todd the revival fared rather poorly, winning only two awards out of its eight nominations. In the same way, New York, New York only won one award, for scenic design, which was featured in the Tonys’ act one first part. Still, the show got some airtime via a performance at the CBS Main Show, and legendary songwriter John Kander received a lifetime achievement award. In terms of surprises, Alex Newell made history by becoming the first openly non-binary actor to win a Tony (J. Harrison Ghee became the second openly non-binary acting winner shortly after), but the victory of Newell was the single for a corn-centric musical. Scaledwhich earned nine nominations.
Moreover, after voters failed to name The sign in the window by Sidney Brustein stars Rachel Brosnahan and Oscar Isaac, it was a surprise that one of the play’s few nominees, Miriam Silverman, won.
Similarly, Brandon Uranowitz’s win as star actor in a play for Leopoldstadt was a bit of a surprise when it was announced. But the victory may have signaled the good performance of Leopoldstadtwhich won four awards, including Best Play.
